Remembering Jordan Guerrero: An Inspiration and a Legacy

Who Was Jordan Guerrero?

Jordan Guerrero was a man of remarkable resilience and spirit. In 2022, he experienced a life-changing spinal cord injury because of an auto accident, becoming a C5/C6 complete quadriplegic after being rear-ended on I-5. Despite this tremendous challenge, Jordan’s determination and positivity shone brightly. Just before his accident, Jordan had learned of his promotion to a chef position at Facebook, a testament to his skill and dedication in the culinary arts.

Jordan’s journey intersected with the Here and Now Project when he was in an acute rehab unit. As a recipient of the project’s support, Jordan became a cherished member of the community. He participated in virtual support meetings, allowing many to know his warmth and enthusiasm. Those who met him in person, particularly at the University of Washington SCI meet-up, found his company a joy.

Embracing the Here and Now Project’s philosophy of “Doing Life,” Jordan dedicated himself to the organization. He used his culinary talents as the principal chef at his first Here and Now Project barbecue, delighting everyone with his expertly prepared pulled pork. He also served on the 5K for Today Committee, where his innovative ideas made a significant impact and his magnetic personality was on full display as he recruited a whopping 50 family members and friends to participate virtually and in-person. Jordan’s contributions and his infectious positivity left an indelible mark on everyone he encountered.

The Jordan Guerrero Award

The sudden passing of Jordan Guerrero was a profound loss for our community. In honor of his enduring spirit, the Here and Now Project has established the Jordan Guerrero Award. This award is designed to celebrate individuals within our community who embody Jordan’s principles of “Doing Life early” after a spinal cord injury.

The Jordan Guerrero Award will be given to someone who, like Jordan, demonstrates a commitment to getting involved, supporting others, and enhancing the Here and Now Project. This person will exemplify the attributes that made Jordan so special: a willingness to help, a dedication to community improvement, and an infectious enthusiasm for life.

Jordan was known for his big smile and hearty laugh, qualities that brought joy and comfort to those around him. Through this award, we aim to keep Jordan’s memory alive and inspire others to follow in his footsteps, continuing the legacy of a man who faced adversity with courage and grace.
